Feeling unsure about what to wear for your upcoming photo session? Whether it’s an engagement, family, maternity, surprise proposal, senior portraits, or any special occasion, choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in how you look and feel in your photos. With so many choices, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed — but don’t worry, we’re here to help! From selecting colors that complement your skin tone to coordinating outfits and avoiding distracting patterns, we’ll guide you every step of the way to help you look your absolute best.

• Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in — if you’re uncomfortable, it will show in the photos.

• Choose outfits that feel like “you.” Wear something you love and feel great wearing.

• Dress a little more elevated than usual — the more polished, the better!

• Layering works wonderfully. Jackets, sweaters, and accessories add depth and variety to your photos.

• Coordinate outfits with each other instead of matching exactly. Choose complementary colors and styles while keeping everyone at a similar level of dressiness.

• Avoid clothing that is lighter than your skin tone, especially bright white, as it can be overpowering in photos.

• Avoid shades of green if your session location has a lot of greenery, such as grass, trees, or nature backgrounds.

• Patterns and busy prints can be distracting and tend to go out of style quickly. Solid colors photograph best.

• Wear shoes you love and can comfortably walk in.

• Leave purses and sunglasses behind unless you specifically want them included in your photos.

• Bringing a pet? Please bring a friend or family member to help watch them during portions of the session they’re not involved in.

• Keep nails clean, simple, and polished so they don’t distract from your beautiful engagement ring or overall look.

• Professional hair and makeup are always recommended and photograph beautifully.

• For engagement sessions, long sleeves for her and long pants for him are recommended. Shorts and baseball caps for men are generally not recommended.
